DURAND (WWJ) -- A piece of a small town's history has been returned to a library in Shiawassee County after vanishing for more than a month.

A large map, framed and protected by plexi-glass, disappeared on Oct. 11 when it was temporarily placed outside the Durand Memorial Library.

The map was damaged by water and needed repairs, so the librarian, Nancy Folaron, said that the two people who took it figured it was being thrown out gave it a new home.

The map was created in 1987 to celebrate Durand's centennial. It depicts the town in 1913, including names of businesses and the homes of railroad workers.

Folaron said the people who took it thought it was garbage and returned it 7 weeks later after noticing a sign outside the library asking, “Do you know where our map is?”

It was an "honest mistake," said Folaron.
