BIG CREEK TWP. (WWJ) -- A Northern Michigan man is facing a felony assault charge after he allegedly threatened utility workers outside his home with a handgun.

Michigan State Troopers with the Alpena Post, assisted by Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officers, responded to a 911 call from a residential property in Big Creek Township, which is east of Grayling, just before 11 a.m. last Thursday.

According to investigators, utility workers were running fiber optic cable across the driveway of a home on Big Creek Rd. when they said the homeowner came out armed with a gun.

MSP said the workers had a permit for the project, and they'd tried to contact the homeowner before they started their work, but no one answered the door.

While workers were pulling line, the homeowner — identified as 49-year-old Michael Clifford Thomas — appeared.

The workers explained why they were there, police said, and that's when Thomas "displayed a handgun" and demanded that the workers leave his property.

When officers police arrived, Thomas was taken into custody and a .45 caliber Glock handgun was seized by troopers.

Thomas was arraigned in 81st District Court in Oscoda County on one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. He was given a $25,000/10% cash or surety bond.

He faces up to four years in prison if convicted as charged.
