(WWJ) A 72-year-old man in Huron County is dead after apparently getting stuck in a septic tank.

Authorities said the man was found partially wedged in the hole of an open septic tank by a septic tank cleaning company worker at around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday at his home on Sebewaing Rd. in Sheridan Township.

The death is believed to be accidental.

An investigation found that the man had been digging out the septic tank cover, which was deeper than most, and that he may have lost his balance while reaching into the hole as there was no ledge or handholds to use to steady himself. It's also believe that the man have had a medical emergency due to the heat, or may have been injured, officials said. Fumes also may have played a part in his death.

Authorities said, contrary to some early reports, the man was stuck, but not submerged in the tank.

An autopsy has been ordered, as the investigation continues.

The man's name is being withheld for a time until his family members can be notified.
