(WWJ) A woman in southern Lapeer County, Michigan, is quite used to seeing squirrels scurrying around outside her home, and even a deer or two.

But this Tuesday was different.

Sara Greer told WWJ's Brooke Allen that she could hardly believe her eyes when she spotted a kangaroo outside her neighbor's home in Hadley Township, west of Metamora.

"I was in complete shock, and I ran outside on my deck and my first initial instinct was to call 911, before it hops away!" Greer said.

"After about five minutes of us staring back and forth at each other, it had finally hopped into my front yard where it was kind of just hopping up and down my driveway."

Greer relayed her story to a polite, but skeptical dispatcher who clearly doubted her story.

"At this point I'm trying to remain calm, and I told her, I'm like, 'I'm located in southern Lapeer County and there's a kangaroo in my backyard.' And her response was, 'Ma'am, are you sure it's a kangaroo?' And I said, 'I'm pretty sure!'"

Another woman was driving to work when she spotted the same marsupial, posting a video to TikTok with the message: "What is a kangaroo doing in Michigan? Whose kangaroo is this?" Footage showed the kangaroo hopping through a cemetery. [See it here].

After Greer shared a photo on the Hadley Neighbors Facebook page, it was learned that the Australian animal in fact belonged to a local resident, and had somehow gotten loose. His name was Douglas, and he likes to eat gram crackers, Greer told Allen.

The dispatcher called Lapeer County Animal Control and eventually the owner — who had a license to keep the exotic pet — was able to bring the kangaroo safely back home.

As for Greer, she said she'd been bothering her husband about getting a second dog... but now she wants a kangaroo.
