CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) - One woman is dead and two other people, including an 8-year-old child, are hospitalized with critical injuries after a fiery head-on crash in Macomb County on Monday evening.
The Clinton Township Police Department said they are currently investigating the fatal collision that occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 on northbound Groesbeck, just south of North Ave.
According to investigators, a 51-year-old female resident of Macomb Twp. was behind the wheel of a gray 2019 Chevrolet Suburban with her 8-year-old daughter as a passenger when it struck a tan 2020 Lincoln Nautilus driven by a 50-year-old female resident also of Macomb Township.
Based on preliminary evidence, police said the Suburban was traveling southbound on Groesbeck when the driver appeared to make an "evasive maneuver," which caused her vehicle to cross left of center and into oncoming traffic.
The driver of the Lincoln was headed northbound in the left lane when the Suburban crashed into her head on.
"As a result of the crash the vehicles caught fire, however the fire was extinguished by a motorist who stopped to render aid," police added.
The two drivers and the child in both vehicles had to be extracted from the wreckage by the Clinton Township Fire Department. The driver of the Suburban was rushed to McLaren Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Her 8-year-old daughter was transported to Children' hospital in Detroit where she remains hospitalized with critical injuries.
The driver of the Lincoln also sustained critical injuries and is currently in the care of McLaren Hospital, police stated.
According to investigators, the crash happened near a curved portion of Groesbeck that has a posted speed limit of 50 mph.
So far, police do not believe drugs or alcohol are contributing factors.
