ALLEN PARK (WWJ) – A 2-year-old girl has died and a 3-month-old baby boy is in critical condition after a crash on northbound M-39 in Allen Park.
Michigan State Police believe the child's mother may have been impaired when she hit another car near Outer Drive at 9 p.m. Wednesday, before crashing into the median.
Officials say the 30-year-old woman was also speeding when the crash occurred, killing the 2-year-old -- who wasn't wearing a seat belt -- after they were ejected. The baby boy, who wasn't lap-belted, was also seriously injured after they were thrown from the seat.
Troopers say they are still working to identify the children as their mother is extremely distraught.
The driver of the other car was not injured and the investigation is still ongoing.
The northbound lanes from I-94 to Outer Drive were closed for a couple of hours as officials were out investigating the crash. The ramps from I-94 to the Southfield Freeway were also closed. All lanes and ramps have since reopened.
MSP originally reported the deceased girl was aged 7, but updated the age to reflect that she was 2-years-old.
