MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - A late night police chase through Macomb County on Monday night ended in the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect who troopers said was driving a stolen vehicle with a handgun inside.

According to Michigan State Police, the trouble began when troopers out on patrol on eastbound I-696 spotted the driver of a Kia speeding down the freeway at around 11:40 p.m.

When troopers ran the license plate, the vehicle came up as recently stolen out of Eastpointe.

State police attempted to stop the Kia, but the driver fled along I-696 to I-94 in Mt. Clemens, where they wrecked on a row of landscaping blocks.

After crashing, MSP said the suspect got out of the vehicle and tried to run from troopers on foot. After a brief chase, the suspect, a 17-year-old male from Mt. Clemens, was arrested.

Neither the suspect, police or the public sustained injures as a result of the incident, MSP added.

Troopers searching the vehicle discovered a 9mm "ghost gun" -- an unserialized and untraceable firearm -- and also found the suspect was currently on probation for a weapons violation out of Wayne County.

The 17-year-old was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony; third-degree fleeing and eluding, a five-year felony; receiving/concealing a stolen motor vehicle, a five-year felony; resisting/obstructing police, a two-year felony; and felony firearm, a two-year felony.

The teen was ordered to remain in the Juvenile Justice Center with no bond based on the seriousness of the crime. The judge recommended the case be transferred to Wayne County, where the juvenile is currently on probation.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office requested to keep the juvenile in Macomb County and to waive jurisdiction of the juvenile to be tried as an adult.

His next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 30.
