DETROIT (WWJ) – A man is behind bars after allegedly stealing a motorcycle and fleeing Michigan State Police in Detroit early Sunday morning.
MSP officials say troopers tried to stop a Harley Davidson motorcycle around 5 a.m. on I-96 near Wyoming on the city’s west side, but the driver sped away.
The trooper found the bike abandoned in the area of Wyoming and Grand River a short time later.
Police then discovered the Harley had been stolen out of Van Buren Township.
The trooper saw a man walk away from the bike in an alley and then go into a nearby Shell gas station. Once backup units arrived, the troopers went to make contact with the man, who then ran away.
He was caught and arrested after a short chase.
Troopers went back to the gas station and spoke with the clerk, who said he saw the man run inside, take off his helmet and jacket and stuff them under a slurpee machine.
The suspect then told the clerk he would be back for his belongings later, “after the police towed his motorcycle.”
The man is being held at the Detroit Detention Center, awaiting charges. Authorities have not released the man’s name, pending prosecutor review.
