DETROIT (WWJ) – A suspect is in custody after allegedly driving recklessly while in the possession of guns and drugs in Detroit Saturday evening.

Michigan State Police say troopers spotted a pickup truck “swerving all over the road with a rim sparking” in the area of the John C. Lodge Freeway (M-10) and Livernois on the city’s west side around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Troopers saw the truck crash into an embankment and removed the driver from the truck as it caught fire.

Troopers used a fire extinguisher on the truck’s motor compartment, MSP said.

While they were speaking with the driver, they noticed the smell of alcohol. The suspect then tried to flee on foot, but was taken to the ground.

MSP says the driver resisted being handcuffed and a trooper used pepper spray, eventually handcuffing and arresting the suspect.

After he was arrested, troopers found crack cocaine on the suspect and two loaded guns – a Tennessee Arms pistol/short barrel rifle and a Springfield Armory pistol – inside the truck.

The suspect was taken to St. John’s Hospital, where they were treated and cleared before being taken to the Detroit Detention Center.

Charges are pending review from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
