DETROIT (WWJ) Michigan State Police say gunfire rang out on I-75 Friday morning, but they don't know who did the shooting.
A trooper with the Michigan State Police was on patrol just before 2 a.m. when he heard shots coming from behind the patrol vehicle.
WWJ's Charlie Langton reports that two SUVs then zoomed by going over 110 miles per hour, and troopers pursued them with lights and sirens, but the suspects continued to speed away.
Tim was in the area when the shots rang out. "It sounded like an automatic, like a high-powered rifle, like really loud," he said.
One of the SUVs -- a silver Chevy Equinox -- eventually lost a tire and stopped near Dearborn.
There were reportedly several bullet holes in the windshield and the back of the vehicle.
The driver was taken into custody.
Later in the day, police said further investigation revealed that the driver and passengers of the Equinox did not fire at the other vehicle, and no firearms were located in their vehicle.
Officials are also trying to determine the relationship between the two parties, as the investigation continues.
The southbound freeway was closed at I-96 in the early hours Friday so that authorities could investigate the incident, but has since reopened to traffic.
Anyone with information about the shooting is being asked to contact the Metro South Post at 734-287-5000.
