DETROIT (WWJ) -- Police are reminding Metro Detroiters to pay attention and avoid distractions while driving after a serious crash on I-94 over the weekend.
Michigan State Police said 911 calls came in just after 11:30 a.m. Sunday about a rolled over vehicle along the eastbound freeway, near Beech Daily/Telegraph Road.
According to the MSP Second District, a preliminary investigation found that a 30-year-old driver "looked down for a cigarette, looked up" and crashed into a white Jeep.
The driver corrected to the left, MSP said, before rolling over several times into the center ditch where he hit a large light pole and came to a stop
The driver of the Jeep sustained a head injuries and a concussion in the crash, police said, while the at-fault driver suffered various internal injuries.
Along with being distracted by the cigarette, MSP said police also believe that the at-fault driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
"Driving requires 100 percent of your attention," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. "While the hands free law will make a dent in distracted driving, drivers should be aware of other distractions that could impact their driving leading to a crash.”
Michigan's new stricter hands-free districted driving law went into effect on June 30. Get all the details at this link.
