DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two women were injured, one of them critically, in a rollover crash along I-96 in Detroit on Sunday.

Michigan State Police said "impaired" driving was a suspected factor in the incident just after 7:30 a.m. on July 30, along eastbound I-96 near the Davison Freeway.

According to investigators, a 30-year-old woman driving an SUV lost control of her vehicle and swerved onto the right shoulder. The vehicle knocked over a light pole, police said, before rolling over and ejecting the driver onto the freeway.

The was taken to a local hospital where she was listed in critical condition, police said, noting that she was "also believed to be impaired."

A passenger in the SUV was partially ejected in the crash. According to the MSP Second district, the passenger was also injured and "became irate when she was advised she needed medical care."

MSP said first responders were eventually able to talk the passenger into getting into an ambulance and going to the hospital.

“The best way to make sure you survive a crash is to wear your seatbelt," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw, in a statement. “Not only will it keep you from being ejected, it will help keep you in control of the vehicle hopefully making the crash less severe.”

Police noted that a handgun was found in the vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
