Michigan State Police offers tips on how to stay safe with major winter storm on the way

DETROIT (WWJ) -- AccuWeather is predicting a huge snow storm to hit Southeast Michigan this week, and the Michigan State Police is offering tips on how to stay safe and prepared.

MSP says to make sure you have plenty of gas for your snow blower and generator as well as enough to fill up your vehicle before the snow starts to fall.

Also, double check that you have an emergency kit in your home and car, which includes a cell phone, portable charger, extra batteries as well as items to keep you warm, like blankets.

Below is a list of other items to include in your emergency kit:

• Extra hats, coats and mittens.
• Windshield scraper
• Shovel
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• First aid kit with any necessary medications
• Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
• Water and snacks
• Pocket knife
• Tow chains or rope
• Tire chains
• Canned compressed air with sealant for emergency tire repair
• Cat litter or sand to help tires get traction, or road salt to melt ice
• Booster cables with fully charged battery or jumper cables
• Hazard or other reflectors
• Bright colored flag, help signs, emergency distress flag and/or emergency flares
• Road maps
• Waterproof matches and a can to melt snow for water
