DETROIT (WWJ) -- No matter where you live in Metro Detroit — expect at least a foot of snow when a major storm hits the area mid-week.
After calling for up to 12 inches of snow for the region on Wednesday and Thursday, AccuWeather forecasters are now predicting 12-18 inches of accumulation for the bulk of the WWJ Newsradio 950 listening area.
"You need to make plans now for a significant winter storm," said WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Dean DeVore, Monday afternoon, stressing that slick and treacherous road conditions will be concern for drivers throughout metro Detroit.
DeVore said the precipitation will start as rain on Tuesday, becoming freezing rain overnight before switching over to snow.
"And there will be a lot of snow that falls pretty continuously Wednesday into Thursday," he said. "We're looking at 12-18 inches is our current forecast here at AccuWeather."
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of Southeast Michigan, in effect from 7 a.m. Wednesday through 11 p.m. Thursday.
NWS said the hazardous conditions could impact the morning and/or evening commutes on both Wednesday and Thursday.
DeVore said it looks like areas south of the city of Detroit will see the most snow, closer to 18 inches, while areas further north are expected to see about a foot.
"A lot of this is going to depend on how quickly that cold air comes in and changes that initial rain over to the ice over to snow," he added, "and we're going to be watching it carefully."
Behind the storm, it's going to be frigidly cold, DeVore said, with temperatures onto getting up in to the teens on Friday.
This means whatever snow we get, it's going to stick around into the weekend, he noted.
