(WWJ) Michigan State Police are taking further measures, in hopes of catching more suspects in shootings on Detroit freeways.
First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said State Police started working with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) three months ago to record traffic camera footage after the revelation that many of the shootings were gang related.
“We had gotten some information from gang members that, with the Green Light cameras all over the city, it was easier for them to target their victims on the freeway,” Shaw told WWJ’s Sandra McNeill.
Detroit’s Green Light program installs security cameras at gas stations and other businesses across the city. At least 500 businesses are in the program.
Another significant problem has been illegal guns, according to Shaw. State Police have confiscated 320 this year, almost double the amount from 2019.
Meanwhile, they have all but lost count of the number of freeway shootings in Metro Detroit in 2020.
There have been “dozens” amid the pandemic, he said.
“Society’s ability to kind of de-escalate things has kind of gone away this year,” Shaw said.
He said another common motive for freeway shootings is road rage.
About half of the freeway shootings have been solved.
