FLINT (WWJ) – A Flint man is dead and another is hospitalized after a police chase near Flint led to a deadly crash early Sunday morning.

Michigan State Police officials say a 45-year-old man died and a 44-year-old is hospitalized in critical condition after they fled a traffic stop just after 12 a.m. Sunday.

MSP troopers conducted a traffic stop for a traffic violation near Pierson and Clio Roads in Flint and when troopers approached the vehicle, they saw a handgun and potential narcotics.

That’s when the 44-year-old driver took off, headed south on Clio Road at a high rate of speed.

Troopers jumped back in their patrol car and began pursuing the suspect vehicle. After about a mile and a half, troopers were unable to catch up, but the suspect’s car crashed near the intersection of Welch Boulevard and Dayton Road.

Both men were extricated from the vehicle and taken to a hospital.

The 45-year-old passenger died of his injuries, according to MSP.

The driver remained hospitalized Sunday afternoon and he is expected to face charges.

No MSP vehicles were involved in the crash.

MSP officials are still investigating the incident.
