MSU's "Sparty" statue hit by suspected drunk driver

EAST LANSING (WWJ) -- Michigan State University's “Sparty” statue did not appear to be damaged, reports said, after it was hit by a car early Thursday morning.

According to MSU Police & Public Safety, suspected drunken driver crashed into the landmark, near Kalamazoo and Beal streets on the MSU's East Lansing, at around 4:15 a.m.

Police said the driver attempted to flee the crash scene on foot but was later found by officers and arrested for suspected drunk driving, police said.

There were no injuries, and the statue was still standing later Thursday, MLive reported.

The suspect was lodged in the Ingham County Jail to await expected charges.

Other details, including the driver's name and age, are being withheld pending an arraignment.
