Mystery continues 3 weeks after ground buckles in Southwest Detroit [VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) -- It’s been nearly three weeks since the ground gave way in Southwest Detroit, resulting in the buckling of the street and the demolishing of a local business.

City officials have crews digging in the area of Fort and Dearborn streets, while engineers from 17 agencies continue to search for answers.

Heavy trucks run in the area nonstop, and the metal at Fort, Iron and Metal recycling facility is piled high, WWJ’s Charlie Langton reports.

There are 53 homes near the area where the incident occurred.

Earlier this month, the owners of Stash Detroit said they noticed their building was having some structural issues, and then smelled gas.

Dearborn Street was eventually "pushed up" some eight to ten feet.

In a statement, DTE Energy said there was no evidence to indicate natural gas was the cause of the incident, and the utility said a natural gas explosion did not occur.

The cause of the ground shift remains unknown.
