(WWJ) Picking up your cell phone for just a second could get you stopped by the cops in Michigan — and officials don't want you to forget it.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has announced that new signs are going up across the state to remind the public about Michigan's new hands-free distracted driving law.
In a post Monday morning on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, the governor wrote: "This law saves lives. It could even save your own. Let’s continue working together to make our roads safer for drivers, bikers, and pedestrians."
Enacted on June 30, 2023, Public Act 41 of 2023 prohibits any individual from holding or using a mobile electronic device while operating a motor vehicle, commercial motor vehicle or a school bus.
This means no cell phone use while driving — not even at a stop sign or a red light — or you could be fined $100 for a first offense, or $250 for a second. Fines are doubled if the infraction occurs during a crash.
Replying to the governor, some on social media mocked the new signs; including a few who noted the signs themselves could be a distraction.
Michigan is now the 26th state in the U.S. to enact a distracted driving law like this one.
