(WWJ) An investigation is underway following a tragic and disturbing discovery Downriver.
Lincoln Park Police said Monday that a resident on Saturday found a bag in a wooded area — near Fort Street and St. Johns — that appeared to be covered with blood.
When police arrived at the scene, they examined the bag and found a dead infant inside.
Detectives believe that the baby had been delivered just prior to being placed in the bag, although it's not clear how long ago that happened.
As the investigation gets underway, many questions remains in the case — including if the baby was stillborn or how the infant died.
Detectives are looking for any information from the public that could help them to identify the mother of the child.
Anyone who knows anything is asked to call Lincoln Park Police at 313-381-1800, extension 4.
