(WWJ) A Shelby Township police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing in a deadly shooting that happened more than two years ago.
The Michigan Attorney General's Office said Tuesday that there was "insufficient evidence" to bring criminal charges against Officer Jeffrey Zuk, who was investigating a report of a stolen car when he shot and killed a Shelby Township man in November of 2018.
Following up on the stolen vehicle report, police saw Malhi driving his mother's car through the parking lot in the parking lot of the apartment complex where he lived with his family, on Spring Lane near Utica and Ryan Roads.
After Malhi parked the vehicle, an officer at the scene approached the car and several times ordered Malhi to show his hands, but he did not comply, according to investigators.
After backup arrived, officers asked Malhi if he had a weapon and stated that he did, the AG said.
Around 10 minutes later, Malhi got out of the car and made sudden movement toward the front of his body, it's alleged.
That's when Zuk fired a single shot — hitting Malhi in the chest and neck causing him to fall to the ground.
Malhi was treated at the scene and then taken to a local hospital where he died.
Authorities later determined that Malhi was unarmed.
Despite that, the AG said Tuesday that, following a review of the video footage, testimony and other evidence, it was determined Zuk "acted under an honest and reasonable belief that he and other officers were in danger," and no criminal charges will be filed.
