(WWJ) – A Northern Michigan man has been charged with drunk driving for a third time after plowing through a row of mailboxes then becoming combative with police.
Michigan State Police were called out to the scene in Freeman Township – southeast of Cadillac – around 4:15 p.m. Saturday after someone reported seeing a white van hit the mailboxes and drive away.
When a trooper arrived, they found parts of the van’s grill that indicated it was a GMC utility van. A short time later the trooper found the van parked on a nearby road with fresh damage from a collision and a truck parked behind it.
As the trooper approached, he saw a man near the driver’s side of the van. The man saw the trooper and quickly walked around to the passenger side. The debris from the crash scene matched the damage to the van.

MSP officials say the man, identified as 41-year-old Larry Norman Maciver from Mesick, initially denied being involved in the crash.
He then changed his story and claimed someone else had been driving when the van hit the mailboxes. The person in the truck told police he was there to help Maciver, who had called him because his van was stuck in the ditch.
The man in the truck pulled the van out of the ditch before the trooper arrived.
Maciver displayed signs of intoxication and sobriety tests were administered. He was placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated. While under arrest, Maciver became combative with the trooper and refused to cooperate, according to MSP officials.
Authorities got a search warrant for a blood sample and Maciver was held in the Wexford County Jail.
Maciver was arraigned in the 84th District Court in Wexford County on one count of felony operating while intoxicated, third offense, one count of resisting and obstructing a police officer, one count of failure to report a crash to fixtures, one count of driving with a suspended license, second offense, and habitual offender, third offense notice.
Bond was set at $25,000 and his next court appearance has been scheduled for Jan. 31.
