MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP/WWJ) - Northern Michigan University is giving students a day off Wednesday, and it may not be for what you expect.

President Fritz Erickson responded to a request from students for a "wellness day."

There will be no classes, though regular services will be available at the Marquette campus.

Why the day off? Erickson notes that NMU students did not have a spring break in an effort to reduce travel and the risk for COVID-19. He says he was willing to call a snow day but the there wasn't an extraordinary amount of snow this winter.

Erickson says a second day off in April will be considered if students believe it would be helpful.

A junior at NMU told FOX TV 6 says the extra day off is much needed.

“I think it’s a good chance for myself and other students to take a break, unwind, get outside, especially since it’s nice out. It definitely takes some stress off me,” says Leah Purkiss.
