PONTIAC (WWJ) -- The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is asking for help from the public to identify and locate the people responsible for what's being called a cowardly and despicable attack.
Sheriff Mike Bouchard on Monday said a reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspects who shot a disabled man with a pellet gun and then mocked him as he rode in his wheelchair, early Saturday morning in Pontiac.
“It is reprehensible that someone would do such a cowardly and despicable thing to an individual in a wheelchair, and they need to be held accountable,” said Bouchard, in a news release detailing the disturbing incident.
According to the sheriff's office, the shooting happened at 12:17 a.m. on July 15, near the intersection of Bennett Street and Baldwin Road.
The victim, a 30-year-old Pontiac man, told deputies he was on the sidewalk heading towards a gas station at the corner of Montcalm and Baldwin when a small tan sedan pulled up next to him.
A suspect in that van then fired multiple shots from a pellet gun, striking the victim several times.
After the shooting, the sheriff's office said the people in the van laughed and shouted at the man before driving away.
The victim went home, called the sheriff's office to report the incident, and then was taken to a local hospital for treatment of multiple minor injuries.
Anyone who can identify the people who did this, or who may have any information about the incident, is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP (800-773-2587). Tips can also be sent to Crime Stoppers at this link.
Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 to the tipster whose information leads to an arrest, and all tipsters will remain anonymous.
