With blizzard-like conditions expected to strike metro Detroit Monday and into Tuesday, one Oakland County leader is issuing a warning: It could be days before local roads are free of snow and ice.
"Please plan to take your time. Slow down. Drive appropriately for the conditions. Don't try to drive fast to get where you're going," advised Crag Bryson of the Oakland County Road Commission's. "Give yourself extra time and slow down."
He added with snow falling for days, and up to another 10 inches expected by noon Tuesday, clearing the roads will not be an easy task for road workers.
Highs in the teens with real-feel temperatures below zero doesn't help either.
"Based on the forecast, it could be days," Bryson warned. "It could take us all week this week and potentially into the weekend to get things cleared up if this forecast comes to pass."
WWJ's Dean DeVore advised Metro Detroit to expect at least 36 hours of treacherous travel -- and to plan accordingly.
"We're going to see snow all day and it's actually going to pick up in intensity later this afternoon and into tonight," DeVore reported. "When we're all said and done, 6-10 inches."
Bryson added that Oakland County will have road crews working 16-hour shifts to get the roads as clear as possible, as fast as possible.
"The freeways are always the top priority," Bryson said. "The priority system is based on the traffic volume and traffic speed. We work down to the busiest surface streets -- the five and seven-lane surface streets. And then work down based on traffic speeds from there. The subdivisions and neighborhoods being at the bottom of the priority list because we have the lowest traffic volume at the lowest speeds on those roads."
