MONITOR TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Deputies responding to breaking and entering call at a Bay County house were in for a surprise when they discovered their suspect wasn't of the human variety.
Turns out the culprit accused of smashing a window and running around the Monitor Township home just after dinner on Monday, April 24, was a deer.
The Bay County Michigan's Sheriff's Office said a husband, wife and their three children were at home just before 5 p.m. when they heard their front window smash in.
When mother Jessica Digby went to check up on her 4-year-old daughter, she found the terrified deer in the living room with shattered glass around it.
“I locked eyes with the deer,” Digby told Mlive. “I was kind of shocked for a moment. It was like the deer looked at me like, ‘Oh, you’re not supposed to be home.’”
Her husband attempted to herd the deer out of the front door, but it scampered around and ended up in one of the children's rooms.
The sheriff's office said Deputy Austin Jobes was the first to arrive at the home. With help of four other colleagues, Lt. Latocki, Deputy Judd, Deputy Dittenber and Lt. Chlebowski, they were able to close off the other rooms and led the deer to the living room before it finally ran out of the home.
"Luckily, neither the deer nor deputies were injured and the family opted not to press charges," the sheriff's office said.
Digby told Mlive the deer was in the home for roughly a half an hour or less and any damage caused by the animal was minimal.
“No one was hurt and when everyone was safe and all was said and done, it was something to laugh about,” she said. Although her children were a little shaken up over the ordeal, Digby added that it could've been a lot worse.
“I consider us lucky," she continued. "... It’s more of a blessing because it brought us all closer together. Who gets to tell a story like that? I’m just focusing on the positives. It just goes to show God has His hand over my family at all times.”
