DETROIT (WWJ) A freeway shooting on I-96 injured a Detroit man, Michigan State Police said.
In a social media statement, State Police (MSP) said the shooting happened on Saturday, December 15, around 1:15 a.m. on westbound I-96 near the Southfield Freeway-- on the city's west side.
According to authorities, Detroit Regional Communication Center learned of a rollover crash and shot spotter alert (10 shots) on I-96. Troopers arrived to the area and could not find the crash or "any obvious evidence of a shooting."
About a half-an-hour later; Dearborn Police informed dispatchers about a 22-year-old Detroit man who claimed he had been shot on the freeway. Metro South troopers spoke with the victim at the hospital.
MSP officials said investigators learned an SUV pulled up alongside a car with three people inside, and an unknown suspect inside that SUV fired "multiple shots." The driver of the SUV then fled westbound on I-96. The victim sustained "multiple gunshot wounds."
Authorities said he drove himself to the hospital. His condition has not been released.
Troopers recovered "several shell casings" during their initial sweep of I-96, according to MSP.
The investigation remains ongoing.
"Currently, there are a lot of unknowns in this shooting such as where it started and what happened prior to the shooting," MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said, "as well as attempting to identify anyone who was in the SUV."
If you have any information on the shooting, you're urged to call 855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak-Up.
