OXFORD, Mich. (WWJ) – Oxford High School students are set to return to in-person learning next week, using a hybrid model at the district’s middle school, before tentatively returning to the high school building on Jan. 24.

The tentative return date will be the first time students are back in the classroom since the Nov. 30 shooting that rocked the community, leaving four students dead: 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, 16-year-old Tate Myre, 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin and 17-year-old Justin Shilling.

Oxford Superintendent Tim Throne on Wednesday announced an update to the district’s return plan.

High school students are set to share the middle school from Jan. 10-21 before the tentative return to the high school. Exact details on the hybrid plan with the middle school weren’t clear, but Throne said principals from each school would be sending specifics in an email to parents later on Wednesday.

The district is holding a pair of virtual town hall meetings Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the return plan and safety measures.

Students and their families will get an open-house opportunity to visit the school before transitioning back to in-person learning.

“We hope this slow transition together at OMS will help in the healing process and ease our high school students back in a familiar academic setting,” Throne said.

“As we have said before, we know it is imperative to get our high school students and staff back together as soon as possible. Wildcats, we will need to work together as a school community to make this happen for them sooner than later.”

Renovations at the high school are planned for the week of Jan. 17. Exact plans were not disclosed.

Throne says the athletic portion of the high school is ready for athletes to return. Practices will resume on January 10 and the Wildcats will begin to host athletic competitions again beginning on Jan. 24.

More details on the district’s return plans can be found on the school’s website.

Accused shooter Ethan Crumbley is facing a slew of charges for the school shooting, including terrorism and murder, while his parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, are charged with involuntary manslaughter. All three are set to appear in court on Friday.
