OXFORD (WWJ) -- An attorney for multiple Oxford High School shooting victims and their families is asking to see the video of what happened inside the building on that tragic November day.
In this federal lawsuit, Attorney Ven Johnson represents six students and five families who are suing the school for negligence, including the father of shooting victim, Justin Shilling.
Johnson says the shooting involves legal issues of both state and federal law, including what the high school counselor did or didn't do before the shooting.
"He [The counselor] sent him to class...and didn't go to the backpack and search it, which their own policies and procedures require them to do," said Johnson.
Along with the video, he also wants the police report.
However, the school's attorney told WWJ Newsradio 950's legal analyst Charlie Langton that they won't release the video or police report at this time as it could jeopardize the criminal case.
When asked if releasing the video could have a negative impact on the case, Johnson told Langton, "Absolutely not. Nothing is going to jeopardize this criminal case in my opinion."
"We deserve to know what the hell went wrong for something like this to happen because identifying the problem is the first step to finding the solution -- and a proper solution could help prevent something like this from ever happening again," said Craig Shilling.
There is a hearing scheduled for Wednesday where a judge will hear arguments on several motions and where this request will be sorted out.
