OXFORD, Mich. (WWJ) -- All classes in the Oxford Community School District were canceled on Tuesday after a social media threat specifically targeted the middle school on Monday.
School officials said in a message on their website they immediately notified law enforcement when they saw the image containing the threat. Police are investigating.
"Out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling school in all our buildings on Tuesday, Dec. 14. We plan to do a full security check of all our buildings while our security experts and law enforcement conduct their investigation," the message said.
Oxford school officials said Tuesday buildings, except for the high school, will reopen on Wednesday. The high school is scheduled to reopen after Christmas break.
The exact nature of the threat was not immediately disclosed.
Tuesday marked two full weeks since the mass shooting that claimed the lives of four students and wounded six other students and a teacher.
Students began returning to the school on Monday to pick up items like backpacks, coats and cell phones that were left behind the day of the shooting. That process went on as planned Tuesday and will continue Wednesday, as school officials say no one will be entering the building.
The alleged threat comes as a rash of school threats across metro Detroit have prompted closures and led to dozens of charges against students.
