OXFORD (WWJ) -- Hundreds of Oxford High School students walked out in protest on Thursday in the wake of the tragic shooting at a Texas elementary school.

According to WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton, the students walked out at noon over the lack of gun control laws and to also show solidarity to the families in Uvalde, Texas after the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday.

The Texas tragedy is the nation's deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade, with a gunman killing 19 children and two adults before he was killed by police.

WWJ's Langton, who is on the scene of the protest, talked to an Oxford mother who said many of the kids are fearful of going to school.

After exiting the building, the students then peacefully protested on the football field for about 30 minutes in an effort to raise awareness for more gun control laws.

A parent tells WWJ Newsradio 950 that there is also a walk-out at Oxford Middle School.

School shootings are all too familiar to these students, as they are about to hit the six-month mark of their own massacre on Monday, May 30, when four students were killed and many others were injured by a 15-year-old gunman.
