OXFORD (WWJ) -- It's a situation all too familiar to students and teachers at Oxford Community Schools.

The massacre on Tuesday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is the nation's deadliest school shooting in nearly a decade, with a gunman killing 19 children and two adults before he was killed by police.

"Our hearts are shattered once again with the news of the school shooting in Texas where so many more precious lives have been needlessly stolen," Ken Weaver, Oxford Community Schools District superintendent, said.

To pay respects to those affected by the tragic mass shooting in Texas and their own community, Oxford's School Board meeting on Tuesday night was cut short.

Oxford School Board President Tom Donnelly began their 6:30 p.m. meeting with a moment of silence with Texas and Michigan in mind.

"As we pray for those in Texas, we think and pray for our own community and our own staff and our children. This just pokes at the scab and begins to peel it back a bit," said Donnelly.

As the scab is pulled back, the community is reminded that this coming Monday, May 31, will mark exactly six months since the shooting at Oxford, which killed four students and injured others.

The board initially wanted to cancel its meeting, but legally couldn't, so it was reduced to allow parents to be home with their children.

All other items on the schedule will be moved to the regularly scheduled June 14 meeting.
