BIRMINGHAM (WWJ) - Authorities in Metro Detroit arrested a 26-year-old Clinton Township man after police accused him of leaving his cellphone in a salon bathroom to record people for almost four hours.
Birmingham Police officers via WDIV were dispatched to the salon after 5 p.m. on May 10 at 270 North Old Woodward Avenue after employees discovered a cellphone left on record in the bathroom trash can.
According to police, the salon workers were suspicious of a man who entered the salon earlier and had asked to use the bathroom. The man came up to the desk after using the restroom and tried to make an appointment.
The employees told officers that when the man was told he needed to leave a credit card number to hold the appointment time, he said he would return later and left the salon.
As reported by WDIV, the man later called the salon and booked a time slot.
A short time later, an employee taking out the trash and cleaning the salon bathroom discovered a cellphone left on record in the wastebasket; according to police, the phone captured 3 hours and 40 minutes of audio.
Police said the phone's recording time matched when the suspect entered the salon and used the bathroom.
Workers told officers that when the man showed up to his appointment, he again used the restroom and looked "upset" after he came out a few moments later.
When police arrived and questioned the 26-year-old, he admitted to putting the cellphone in the bathroom and he knew it was wrong.
The man was arrested for eavesdropping; The Detroit News reported that Birmingham Police Chief Mark Clemence said the incident "is currently an open investigation."
