ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WWJ) – Traffic is back to normal in Metro Detroit Thursday afternoon after a police chase that came to an end on I-696 near Roseville caused backups earlier in the day.

Michigan State Police officials say a suspect wanted for assault with intent to murder led police on a chase through multiple cities that ended with his arrest on the freeway.

The suspect was wanted out of Warren for firing shots into a dwelling and two felony weapons charges, a Warren police official told WWJ.

The chase went through Clinton Township, Warren and Roseville, according to police. Detroit police officers spotted his vehicle and notified Warren police.

Police had been telling drivers to avoid westbound I-696 near Van Dyke, but the freeway has since reopened. There were still slight residual backups due to the situation.

The chase involved about 15-20 police cars from Detroit, Warren and Michigan State police. A Warren police official told WWJ the chase only reached speeds of about 70 mph.

MSP troopers surrounded the suspect's car and the chase came to an end without a crash. No patrol cars were damaged in the chase, MSP said.

The suspect surrendered without incident.

Authorities have not released any details about the suspect or the crimes they were wanted for.
