SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Southfield police were involved in a high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle along 12 Mile Road on Wednesday afternoon, officials confirmed.

A public Tweet around 12:44 p.m. urged drivers to be a cautious near the Southfield and Farmington Hills border as police were seen chasing after a Dodge Durango Hellcat up 12 Mile Road to Telegraph.

Deputy Chief Jeffrey A. Jagielski said to WWJ's Brooke Allen that an officer on patrol spotted the stolen car and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver took off.

"The officer did pursue for a short time before terminating the pursuit," Jagielski confirmed.

He said the officer made that decision because high speed chases are very dangerous.

Unfortunately, they are also becoming more frequent.

Jagielski said vehicles are often stolen in other jurisdictions and turn up in Southfield. When police go to stop the vehicle while they identify out on the road, the driver takes off, creating a dangerous situation for officers and other drivers.

Cases such as these end up on the desk of the South Oakland Auto-Theft Unit, which operates out of the Southfield Police Department.

"They do a really good job of curbing the auto thefts in our town," said Jagielsk, "but that doesn't stop people from going out and stealing cars in other jurisdictions and coming into Southfield."

No other details were released about the incident at this time, but the investigation remains on going.
