(WWJ) Investigators have identified a person hit and killed on I-75 last week as a 41-year-old Macomb County woman, although they still don't know why she was walking on the freeway.

According to Michigan State Police, Paula Quarterman of Warren was on foot when she was struck shortly before 10 pm. on Jan. 11, on northbound I-75 near Mile Marker 8, south of Monroe.

After a preliminary investigation, troopers determined the woman was hit by an SUV traveling north on I-75, and that speed, careless driving, drugs and alcohol were not believed to be a factor.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

While initial efforts to identify the woman were unsuccessful, police said they were able to ID Quarterman using her fingerprints, with help from the MSP Crime Lab in Northville.

Why she was walking on the freeway, however, remains a mystery.

MSP said Quarterman has no known acquaintances in the area, and they don't know what she was doing in Monroe County.

As the investigation continues, anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Det. Sergeant Michael Peterson of the MSP Monroe Post at 734-242-3500.
