Police investigating violent attack at Howell High School caught on video

HOWELL, Mich. (WWJ) -- Police are investigating after a video circulating on social media appears to show two teens violently attacking another teen at Howell High School last week.

The video shows at least four people approaching a student outside the building, when two of them begin to repeatedly punch and kick the victim as they fall to the ground, before taking his shoes and walking away.

Many details about the incident remain unclear, but Howell police tell WWJ they have completed an investigation and have sent their findings to the Livingston County Prosecutor's Office for review. As of Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors had not yet reviewed the case.

Authorities say the student who was attacked is autistic, according to a report from WXYZ in Detroit. Police have been in contact with the students responsible in the attack, and they could be facing criminal charges.

School officials said they have “started the discipline process per the district’s student handbook, and law enforcement is involved,” though it remained unclear what disciplinary measures had been taken as of Wednesday afternoon.

A video of the incident was posted to Twitter on Sept. 2, apparently two days after the attack happened.

Editor’s note: the following video contains graphic content and may be disturbing to viewers.

The school's superintendent, Erin J. MacGregor, released the following statement in a letter to parents before Labor Day weekend:

"I would like to address a video that is circulating on social media. The video shows an assault on a high school student that took place shortly after the school day concluded. The video is disturbing and it is troubling to know that this occurred on our campus. I know that the actions of a few do not represent our student body as a whole, as evidenced by the fact that it was students who brought this matter to the high school’s attention. Upon learning of the incident, the high school administration worked quickly to identify those involved. As a school and a district, we do not tolerate this type of behavior. The school has started the discipline process per the district’s student handbook, and law enforcement is involved.
