WARREN, Mich. (WWJ) -- A 47-year-old Warren police officer on a motorcycle was taken to a hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was found unconscious on a freeway ramp.

"He has some very serious injuries [in ribs and lungs]," said City Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer, "We're hoping that he does recover."

Michigan State Police say around 4 p.m. they received a call from Warren police advising that the nine-year veteran was unconscious but breathing on the ramp to westbound I-696 near Gratiot Avenue.

The officer was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, though authorities have not disclosed his condition.

MSP investigators said on Twitter the officer was running lidar for speeding drivers on the I-696 Service Drive at the time.

Officials say the officer was seen moving from his stationary position and traveling on the service drive when he struck the curb at the beginning of the ramp, causing him to lose control of his bike.

MSP says he put the bike down and was dislodged from it, before coming to a complete stop in the middle of the ramp.

MSP’s crash reconstruction team is still investigating the incident.

WWJ's Erin Vee, reporting live from the I-696 Service Drive just after 4:30 p.m., described it as "a chaotic scene."

"It has died down quite a bit, but many, many units still on scene. I've counted at least 22 police and emergency vehicles that are still here," she said.

"I actually watched him being transported onto the ambulance and then escorted with a convoy of at least 14 to 16 vehicles," Vee reported.

The westbound I-696 Service Drive was closed at Bunert due to the incident.

No additional injuries were reported.
