Police searching for man who firebombed Roseville apartment on Halloween

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WWJ) -- Police are searching for a man they say firebombed an apartment in the early morning hours of Halloween.

Authorities tell WWJ the incident happened shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 31 in the 30000 of Nardelli near Flora. Surveillance video captured a man lighting an explosive at the back sliding door, resulting in two small explosions.

Police say the residence, located within a one-story apartment complex, did not sustain a lot of damage in the incident, though there was some smoke damage, damaged glass, the floor was scorched and some cardboard in the kitchen was burnt.

It did not appear the dwelling caught on fire, Deputy Police Chief Mitch Berlin told WWJ.

No injuries were reported in the firebombing.

Authorities are not sure of a motive in the incident, though Berlin tells WWJ detectives are exploring some theories and chasing every possible lead.

While police have not released the surveillance video, Crime Stoppers has released images of the suspect, seen wearing a black hooded Nike sweatshirt, black pants, black shoes and a black mask.

Police have been called to the residence before for different events, which may be linked to this incident, Berlin said, so detectives are “backtracking and trying to talk to some known subjects” to see if they can link the incidents.

While there are children that live in the complex, Berlin did not say whether any children lived in the targeted home or whether anyone was home at the time.

Berlin says it was “very lucky” that the attached units didn’t catch fire.

“If the fire gets up in the rafters, it could spread very rapidly,” Berlin said.

Berlin said this is a very rare occurrence in Roseville, noting there have been maybe only about a half a dozen similar incidents in his nearly three decades with the Roseville Police Department.
