STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WWJ) – A bus driver is behind bars after crashing a school bus full of children while she was allegedly drunk on Tuesday afternoon.

Sterling Heights police say it all unfolded around 4 p.m. when they were called to the area of Hall and Schoenherr Roads on the report of an accident involving a Utica school bus.

When officers arrived, they saw the crash only involved the school bus, which had gone off the road and struck a street sign, causing minor damage.

There were about 30 or 40 students from Henry Ford II High School on the bus at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

As officers investigated, Sterling Heights Lt. Mario Bastianelli tells WWJ the officers smelled a “strong odor of intoxicants coming from her breath" and she seemed confused about what had just happened.

The driver had no explanation as to why she went off the roadway, Bastianelli said.

The woman, whose name and age have not been released, blew a .10 on a preliminary breath test.

All students were evacuated from the bus and released to their families, Bastianelli said.

She was arrested without incident and taken to the Sterling Height Police Department for processing.

She is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
