LANSING (WWJ) -- A Catholic priest and former retreat center director has been charged with embezzlement after allegedly siphoning over $800,000 dollars from three elderly priests.
Father David Rosenberg is the former director of the Lansing Catholic Diocese's St. Francis Retreat Center, which includes apartments for retired priests. The 70-year-old ran the center from 2015 to 2021.
Authorities allege that the defendant embezzled approximately $830,000 from three of the priests who resided at the retreat center, two of whom have since passed away.
The money is believed to have been stolen between January 2018 and December 2020 and used to fund Rosenberg's charitable foundation, FaithFirst, formerly known as the Rosenberg Family Corporation.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced official charges Friday, a day after Rosenberg was arraigned in a district court in Clinton County.
Rosenburg faces a total of seven felony charges, including three counts of embezzling $100,000 or more from a vulnerable adult, which carries a 20-year prison sentence.
Bond has been set at $25,000, and the defendant is prohibited from serving as a financial proxy or holding power of attorney for any other person.
A probable cause conference is set for Thursday, December 15, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for the following week.
