(WWJ) – Michigan hunters have a chance to get multiple hunting tags and some prizes with the Pure Michigan Hunt.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says elk and bear licenses are on sale now through June 1 and applicants can increase their odds, or even get two tags in a single year by picking up Pure Michigan Hunt applications.
Previous Pure Michigan hunt recipient Jerry Peak of Crystal got two elk tags and was able to harvest two 6-by-6 bull elk.
The DNR says the secret to Peak’s success in getting two elk was the Pure Michigan Hunt.
The Pure Michigan Hunt gives hunters a chance at licenses to hunt elk, bear, spring and fall turkey and antlerless deer, as well as first pick at a managed waterfowl hunt area. The program also offers prizes worth thousands, including hunting blinds, sleds, rifles, shotguns and more.
Three lucky hunters are chosen each year.
All licenses are transferable – winners can keep licenses for themselves or transfer licenses to a friend or loved one.
The DNR says Peak transferred his Pure Michigan Hunt elk tag to his son so they could hunt together.
Pure Michigan Hunt applications are only $5 each. Hunters can only buy one elk chance and one bear preference point, and the deadline is June 1. But that's not the case with the Pure Michigan Hunt, as there is no limit to the number of applications you can buy through Dec. 31.
Each application helps fund Michigan's wildlife habitat restoration and management.
Hunters can apply for all three anywhere hunting licenses are sold, or directly online at Michigan.gov/DNRLicenses.
