KALAMAZOO COUNTY (WWJ) – Two people are expected to face charges after a case of road rage in Southwest Michigan ended in an ugly crash and a fight on I-94.
It all unfolded shortly before 9 a.m. near mile marker 83 in Comstock Township, according to Michigan State Police. Troopers got a call from passersby reporting two men were fighting in the middle of the freeway.
A preliminary investigation revealed a 22-year-old Illinois man driving a passenger car cut off a 42-year-old man from Portage, Mich., driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck. That led to the pickup driver tailgating the other driver, MSP officials said.
Both drivers then “engaged in repeated reckless driving behavior,” which ultimately led to a collision between the two vehicles.
The driver of the passenger vehicle lost control and struck the cement barrier wall, resulting in minor injuries. The driver of the pickup lost control and rolled over multiple times before coming to rest in the ditch. He was uninjured.
Both were reportedly wearing seatbelts, and drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash.
After the crash, witnesses saw the driver of the pickup physically assaulting the driver of the passenger car, officials said.
While no arrests were made at the scene, warrant requests are expected to be submitted on both drivers for reckless driving. The Portage man is expected to also be charged with assault and battery.
Troopers were assisted by Kalamazoo Sheriff’s Office and Comstock Fire Department. The crash remains under investigation, pending prosecutor’s review. Names of the drivers will not be released prior to any potential arrests and arraignments.
