(WWJ) – A Romulus man is facing a number of charges for the crash that killed Vivian Carmody and injured her husband, Eastern Market CEO Dan Carmody last Friday night.

Jacob Mraulak, 28, was arraigned Wednesday afternoon on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, charges of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and reckless driving causing serious injury.

Authorities say the couple was walking to dinner around 5:30 p.m. Friday in the area of St. Aubin and Lafayette when they were hit.

Mraulak was allegedly driving the wrong way on Lafayette and drove up onto the sidewalk, hitting the victims.

Vivian Carmody died at the hospital, while her husband is recovering from his injuries. He was reportedly listed in stable condition earlier this week.

Detroit Police Chief James White said on Monday the driver was intoxicated with alcohol and narcotics and may have overdosed before the crash. The driver also hit a tree after hitting the couple. He was given a dose of narcan and is expected to survive.

Mraulak was given a $250,000 cash bond with conditions of no alcohol, no intoxicating substances, GPS and alcohol tether, and house arrest.  A bond-redetermination hearing is scheduled for Friday, while a probable cause hearing will be held next week.

“This is a harsh fact: Every time you get behind the wheel of a car, you should be acutely aware that you are potentially driving an instrumentality of death,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a press release. “Traffic accidents happen. There is no denying that. Criminal traffic tragedies do not just happen. There is a reason for them, and criminal consequences attach including, possibly, a loss of freedom.”

“Our hearts go out to Mr. Carmody and his family at this very difficult time.” she said.

Dan Carmody has been the CEO of the Eastern Market Partnership since 2007.

“The Eastern Market family is deeply sorry for the Carmody family and will give our full support to Dan and his family through this incredibly sad and difficult time,” President Katy Trudeau said in a statement over the weekend.
