ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- It's official: The Winter Blast will be on the move next year — to the suburbs.
Royal Oak will be hosting Winter Blast 2022 after Detroit was unable to find a sponsor for the event as it usually has for the past 16 years at Campus Martius Park.
The event — planned for Feb. 4-6 — will have a lot of the same elements it's always had, like the snow tubing slide, an ice skating rink and plenty of food and entertainment; however, there will be a few differences.
Festival director Jon Witz said this year they're creating a zipline that will fly across the new Centennial Park in the city's downtown area.
"There's a cool statue there that you can almost high-five as you'll be flying through the park, which will be great," said Witz.
There is also a plan to increase entertainment by having up to 100 bands, hosted by local venues, that will play at bars, restaurants and heated tents across the downtown area.
And what's winter without roasting some marshmallows over a fire? They're planning to have that, too
Event hours are:
Friday, Feb. 4, 4 p.m. - 11 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 5, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 6, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Admission is free.
