ANN ARBOR (WWJ) -- A four-mile stretch of I-94 could be closed for up to a week after a semi-truck with a raised trailer bed struck an overpass as it drove along the freeway in Ann Arbor Monday morning.
Just after 9 a.m. Monday, the Ann Arbor Police Department Tweeted out that all lanes were blocked on eastbound I-94 at Liberty St., located along the west boundary of the city.
According Ann Arbor PD, Michigan State Police reported that a semi-truck had crashed into the Liberty St. overpass, causing significant damage.
A picture shared shortly after shows the full extent of the collision. In the photo, the semi-truck is just the cab and the trailer bed.
The truck's hydraulics are engaged, raising the trailer bed -- which is lodged into the overpass. Chunks of fallen concrete are scattered across the freeway.
Following the initial assessment, eastbound I-94 was shut down from M-14 all the way to the Ann Arbor-Saline Rd exit. This includes the entrance ramp from Jackson Rd.
Officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation said in an update late Monday afternoon the eastbound lanes of the freeway could be shut down in the area for up to a week, as emergency repairs will begin on Tuesday.
The exact schedule won’t be known until repairs begin, MDOT officials said.
It is currently unclear why the semi's hydraulics were engaged and the trailer bed propped up while the semi passed under Liberty Street.
In the meantime, eastbound traffic can take M-14 to southbound US-23 to get back to I-94.
