LYON TWP (WWJ) -- A semi-truck carrying glue lost control and overturned on an Oakland County freeway, requiring multiple tow trucks to remove it and causing a five-mile-long backup.
Michigan State Police were called to the scene of a semi-truck crash on westbound I-96 at Milford Rd., just after 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The Michigan Department of Transportation now says westbound I-96 is expected to remain closed between Milford Rd. and Kent Lake Rd. until around 5 a.m. Tuesday.
This is to allow for continued clean-up, including removal of the truck, guard rail repair and hazardous material clean up on road and side slope.
According to MSP, a preliminary investigation found that the driver of the semi was heading west on I-96 when another car allegedly cut him off, causing him to lose control of the truck.
Veering to the right, the semi struck the guard rail and overturned on top of the metal barrier.
The semi was carrying glue, which began spilling out as a result of the collision.
By 1:30 p.m., MSP said heavy tow-trucks were on the scene, working to stabilize the truck, which was still in danger of flipping over the rail into the steep side ditch.
All lanes of traffic were being used to pull the semi back onto the freeway, causing massive delays along westbound I-96.
Officials also say that the MDOT will need to look at and repair the damaged done to the guard rail before the right lane can be safely re-opened, once the truck is removed and the glue spill is cleared. That is expected to take some time.
MSP First Lieutenant Mike Shaw called it "a very sticky situation" and reiterated the importance of paying attention while driving, especially when travelling through a work zone.
Drivers were being forced off I-96 at Milford Rd. and allowed to re-enter at Kensington.
Shaw said there were no injuries in the crash.
