SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) -- The Shelby Township Police Department is out with a warning for residents... with both vehicle thefts, and thefts from vehicles on the rise.

Police in the Macomb County community say there's been an uptick in cases of stolen cars, as well as cases in which personal property left in cars is being stolen.

The advice for residents from police is simple: "Lock your vehicle doors."

According to Shelby Twp. police, 90% of these crimes have been from unlocked vehicles with the keys left in them.

"The Shelby Township Police Department reminds everyone to remove your valuables from your vehicles INCLUDING the keys," police added, in a social media post. "Please lock your vehicle when you are not using it. You can prevent yourself from being a victim from this crime by following these easy steps."
