(WWJ) Michigan State Police are investigating a shooting that wounded two people on the freeway in Detroit.
Police said troopers were dispatched to the scene on eastbound I-96 near Scotten and West Grand Blvd., at around 4 p.m. Tuesday.
A call came in about people in two cars who were shooting at each other, police initially said. However, investigators now believe only one person fired.
A man and a woman were shot and were taken to a local hospital. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw.
"We found that they got involved in a traffic altercation on a surface street in the city of Detroit," Shaw told WWJ's Stephanie Davis. "As they were driving away one of the vehicles followed them down onto the freeway and fired multiple shots at their vehicle."
Further investigation revealed the incident stemmed from traffic crash near a gas station on Schaefer, according to State Police.
Police said the suspect car fled the scene, but there is no information about the vehicle at this time.
Shaw said they're speaking with witnesses to get a good description of the car.
At 6 p.m. the I-96 eastbound Local/Express lanes were closed at M-8/Davison Ave. for the investigation. As of 9:05 p.m., they have reopened.
MSP has said that a majority of freeway shootings in recent weeks and months were a result of road rage.
