STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) -- Beginning this summer, the City of Sterling Heights will withhold all water and sewer payments to the Great Lakes Water Authority until there's a resolution in the dispute with Highland Park's $54 million in unpaid bills.

Sterling Height's City Council adopted the resolution Tuesday which will stop payments starting July 1. It also objects to the increased water and sewer rates created by Highland Park's non-payment over a decade.

Mayor Michael Taylor said this protest is a “matter of fundamental fairness.”

"They are screwing us over and they don't care -- and it has to stop." said Taylor. "You have to look yourself in the mirror and say, 'How long are you going to take advantage of your neighbors and the communities around you? How long are you going to take without giving?' And if that's the type of people that you are, shame on you -- you oughta do the right thing."

Taylor added that he can't understand how this is happening in broad daylight without anyone doing anything about it.

Several communities in Macomb and Wayne counties have also vowed to withhold all, or a portion of their municipal water bills as a protest.
